As his beautiful fiancée, Kyoko (Yoshiko Mita), lies in a coma following an unsuccessful suicide attempt, grief-stricken Susumu Likura (Kinnosuke Nakamura) ponders the unhappiness and violence that have been his family's curse for decades. From the early 17th century, when his ancestor Jirozaemon (also Nakamura) commits hara-kiri after failing to protect Lord Hori (Masayuki Mori) in battle, six generations of the Likura family have fallen victim to dark forces.
Best known for dramas such as Until We Meet Again and An Inlet of Muddy Water, the Japanese filmmaker Tadashi Imai was also the director of Revenge, a highly accomplished and brutal jidaigeki picture. These two sensibilities come together in the film that might just stand as Imai's masterpiece: Cruel Tale of Bushido.
