Japanese master of suspense Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure, Pulse) delivers an intense tale of grief, obsession and revenge in this 5-part psychological thriller miniseries. Penance opens with the startling, mysterious murder of school girl Emili, and then follows the life trajectories of the four girls present at the scene of the crime as they become adults and bear the burden of the tragedy. Incensed at the girls' inability to identify the killer, the victim's grieving mother Asako (Kyoko Koizumi) demands a "penance" on each of the survivors - a self-punishment that each girl must experience. Fifteen years later, Asako confronts each woman in turn for her penance, triggering a chain of shocking events.
