Some strangers come to fish on Janitzio, an island in Lake Pátzcuaro, Michoacán. Zirahuén, one of the indigenous people who have exclusive rights to fishing, fights with one of the strangers and kills him. Another stranger, the speculator Manuel, laughs at the warnings of the local man Don Pablo, who advises him not to interfere with the native women. When Zirahuén protests against Manuel’s abuses, who sells the fish at a price that suits him, he has him jailed. Manuel offers Zirahuén’s girlfriend, Eréndira, to be released in exchange for spending a few days with her in Pátzcuaro. Zirahuén is released from jail, finds out everything, kills Manuel, and forgives Eréndira after learning from a man named Luis what she has done for him. However, Tacha, Zirahuén’s spurned lover, instigates the town against Eréndira, and she is stoned to death, according to tradition. Zirahuén then throws Eréndira’s corpse into the lake.
