During the reign of Don Porfirio, Captain Felipe, recently graduated from the Military Academy, is placed by the cruel Major Ramos in charge of a section of rural troops marching to Ixtepec. There, Felipe administers justice and arrests his good lieutenant Valentín for deceiving young women. The wealthy landowner Irube demands that Felipe arrest his foreman Hipólito, who has seriously wounded him. No one can tell Felipe about Hipólito, and he courts Rosa, the foreman’s girlfriend, in search of a house. Hipólito appears and drives Felipe away with his pistol when he offers a serenade to Rosa. Doña Engracia, Hipólito’s mother, brings to the church a reredos thanking the Virgin for saving her son. This tells Felipe that Hipólito is in Rio Hondo with his Aunt Leonor. Irube’s discontent leads Ramos to relieve Felipe of his duties, but he finds Hipólito working the land. Alarmed because Ramos threatens to whip Doña Engracia, Rosa reveals Felipe’s whereabouts. He is arrested after declaring that he will only hand over to the caporal if Hipólito is guaranteed a legal trial. Rosa, rejected in the town for having tried to save Doña Engracia at Hipólito’s expense, visits Felipe in his cell and tells him that she does not love the caporal: her engagement to himwas agreed upon when they were both children. Felipe and Rosa love each other. Irube offers Felipe a promotion and transfer if he forgets everything, but the captain indignantly rejects the offer; he knows that Irube wants to exercise the right of pernada on Rosa. Freed by Valentín, Felipe flees on horseback with Rosa. The rural men pursue him from one side and Hipólito from the other. Hipólito is killed by the rural men when he is about to shoot Felipe, who in turn kills Ramos. Afterward, Felipe gives a speech to Irube, marks his face with aknife, and leaves with Rosa, declaring himself a rebel against the government. The rural men join him, convinced by the speech.
